Steel S1 vs S2
Steel · grade comparison
Steel S1 and S2 are both steel grades. S2 is the stronger of the two: yield strength 460 MPa (66.7 ksi) against 415 MPa (60.2 ksi) for S1, about 11% more; tensile strength follows at 760 MPa (110 ksi) vs 690 MPa (100 ksi). In exchange, S1 is the more ductile: elongation 25% versus 20% for S2. S2 runs hotter in service (400°C vs 200°C continuous) and S1 conducts electricity better (7.5 % IACS vs 5.5 % IACS). On the shop floor, S1 sits in a lower cost tier (premium, $$$) than S2 (high, $$$$).
S1Choose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when cost is the deciding factor.
S2Choose it when strength drives the design, or when the part sees heat.
S1 vs S2: propertiesHow to read these bars
- One bar per material. A full bar is the highest value among all steel grades in the FabDigit library; each bar is drawn as a share of that.
- The better value (by the usual engineering direction) is in bold. Rows with no direction — density, thermal conductivity — have no bold.
- Values are typical room-temperature figures for the condition named on each card.
- Confirm against the certified mill or resin datasheet before design release.

S1 vs S2 — frequently asked
Is S2 stronger than S1?
Yes. S2 has a typical yield strength of 460 MPa (66.7 ksi) against 415 MPa (60.2 ksi) for S1 — about 11% more. Tensile strength is 760 MPa (110 ksi) vs 690 MPa (100 ksi).
Which is cheaper, S1 or S2?
S1 is the lower-cost material: it sits in the premium tier ($$$) while S2 is high ($$$$). Part price depends far more on geometry, tolerance and quantity than on raw stock — upload a CAD file for a live quote.
Which welds better, S1 or S2?
S1. Its weldability rates poor (20/100) against poor (15/100) for S2.
