What is Stellite 1?

Stellite 1 is a high-carbon Co-Cr-W hardfacing alloy (UNS R30001) with an abundant hard-carbide network, giving the family's maximum abrasion and metal-to-metal wear resistance at about 53 HRC. It is supplied as castings, cast rod, covered electrodes and atomized powder and applied by OAW, GTAW, PTA, SMAW, laser cladding, HVOF or spray-fuse. The limits are brittleness — 620 MPa tensile at 0.5 % elongation — so it cracks under impact or weld restraint, service is capped near 750 °C, and finishing is by grinding or EDM only. Use Stellite 12 or Stellite 6 where some toughness is required. Stellite 1 has a density of 8.69 g/cm³ (0.314 lb/in³), heavier than 86% of cobalt-chrome alloy grades. It melts at 1,255°C (2,291 °F). Stellite 1 has a tensile strength of 620 MPa (89.9 ksi), weaker than 89% of cobalt-chrome alloy grades. Elongation at break is 0.5% and the elastic modulus is 250 GPa (36.3 Msi).

What is Stellite 1 used for?

  • valve seats
  • cutting tips
  • wear pads
  • hardfacing rods

Limitations

  • Needs corrosion protection — 55/100, worse than 93% of cobalt-chrome alloy grades
  • Limited ductility — 0.5%, worse than 89% of cobalt-chrome alloy grades
  • Difficult to weld — 20/100, worse than 87% of cobalt-chrome alloy grades

Chemical Resistance SummaryPassive in atmosphere, steam, seawater and many oxidising media; good resistance to sulphur-bearing and molten-glass environments. Less corrosion resistant than Stellite 6/21 because much of the Cr is consumed as carbides; attacked by hot HCl, HF and strong reducing acids.

Working with Stellite 1

Is Stellite 1 easy to machine?

Effectively unmachinable as deposited — finish by grinding (SiC/CBN wheels), EDM or lapping; any pre-machining must be done on the softer substrate.

Can Stellite 1 be welded?

Deposit with preheat 300–500 °C, low heat input and slow furnace cooling; multi-pass overlays crack readily, so build minimum thickness and avoid restraint.

Can Stellite 1 be formed, bent or molded?

No cold or hot forming; supplied as castings, cast rod or atomized powder and applied by casting, welding overlay or thermal spray.

What surface finishes work on Stellite 1?

Ground and lapped to a mirror seat finish; no anodizing or plating — the alloy is used bare and self-passivates in air/steam.
