What is ZrC PS?
ZrC PS is ZrC heat treated to PS — choose for larger or complex shapes where cost and near-net forming matter more than peak strength; residual porosity lowers strength and conductivity. The elastic modulus is 320 GPa (46.4 Msi). ZrC PS has a density of 6 g/cm³ (0.217 lb/in³), heavier than 65% of ceramic grades. It melts at 3,420°C (6,188 °F). HP is the default condition FabDigit quotes; PS is available on request or by drawing note.
Advantages
- High service temperature — 1,700°C (3,092 °F), better than 90% of ceramic grades
Limitations
- Needs corrosion protection — 55/100, worse than 77% of ceramic grades

Working with ZrC PS
Is ZrC easy to machine?
Green or pre-sintered bodies can be shaped conventionally; fired ZrC needs diamond grinding, lapping or EDM (it is electrically conductive, so wire/sinker EDM works well).
Can ZrC be welded?
Not weldable; join by active brazing (Ti/Zr-bearing filler), diffusion bonding, or co-sintering with metal or carbide interlayers.
Can ZrC be formed, bent or molded?
Formed by uniaxial/cold-isostatic pressing then hot pressing, SPS or pressureless sintering above 2100 °C; sintering aids (C, B4C, SiC, MoSi2) and low-oxygen powder are needed for density.
What surface finishes work on ZrC?
Diamond polish to a metallic grey mirror; for air service above ~500 °C apply SiC, ZrB2-SiC or iridium overlays, since bare ZrC oxidises to porous ZrO2.

ZrC PS — frequently asked
What is ZrC PS used for?
ZrC PS is typically used for nuclear TRISO fuel coatings, UHTC composites, cutting tool inserts, wear-resistant coatings and rocket nozzle liners. In short: 1800 °C inert-service carbide; conductive, EDM-friendly ceramic; needs oxidation coating.
Is ZrC PS easy to machine?
Not especially — machinability is rated not recommended (8/100, better than 69% of ceramic grades). Green or pre-sintered bodies can be shaped conventionally; fired ZrC needs diamond grinding, lapping or EDM (it is electrically conductive, so wire/sinker EDM works well).
Can ZrC PS be welded?

What is the maximum service temperature of ZrC PS?
ZrC PS is rated for continuous use to about 1,700°C (3,092 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
