YN10 SHIP
Grade
ISO P05
SHIP = sinter-HIP, fine grain, low porosity
Choose sinter-HIP fine-grain, low-porosity material when higher transverse rupture strength and edge reliability are required for thin-wall finish turning or continuous high-speed turning.
Values for the SHIP condition
What is YN10 SHIP?
YN10 SHIP is YN10 in the SHIP grade — choose sinter-HIP fine-grain, low-porosity material when higher transverse rupture strength and edge reliability are required for thin-wall finish turning or continuous high-speed turning. The elastic modulus is 445 GPa (64.5 Msi). YN10 SHIP has a density of 6.4 g/cm³ (0.231 lb/in³), heavier than 69% of ceramic grades.
Advantages
- Tough — resists crack growth — 9.5 MPa·√m (8.65 ksi·√in), better than 84% of ceramic grades

Physical2
YN10 SHIP has a density of 6.4 g/cm³ (0.231 lb/in³), heavier than 69% of ceramic grades.
Mechanical10
The elastic modulus is 445 GPa (64.5 Msi).
Thermal5
YN10 SHIP is rated for continuous service to 900°C (1,652 °F). It conducts heat at 20 W/m·K (11.6 BTU/hr·ft·°F), worse than 55% of ceramic grades. Thermal expansion is 7.8 µm/m·K (4.33 µin/in·°F).
Electrical1
YN10 SHIP has an electrical resistivity of 9×10⁻⁷ Ω·m.
Chemical & Environmental2
Corrosion resistance is good (65/100), worse than 67% of ceramic grades.
Sustainability4
Producing a kilogram of YN10 SHIP takes about 260 MJ of energy and emits 16 kg of CO₂ — more than 69% of ceramic grades. Typical recycled content is 10%.
Manufacturability3
YN10 SHIP's machinability is not recommended (3/100, worse than 95% of ceramic grades).

Working with YN10 SHIP
Is YN10 easy to machine?
After sintering, shape only by diamond-wheel grinding, EDM (the material is conductive) or laser; pre-sintered blanks can be rough-formed with carbide tools.
Can YN10 be welded?
Not fusion weldable. Braze to steel tool bodies with Ag-Cu-Ti or BAg-series filler in vacuum or by induction, cooling slowly because the CTE difference makes it crack-prone.
Can YN10 be formed, bent or molded?
Powder metallurgy route: spray granulation, die pressing, extrusion or injection moulding, dewaxing, then vacuum or low-pressure (sinter-HIP) sintering; shrinkage is about 18-22 %.
What surface finishes work on YN10?
Diamond grinding and polishing reach Ra 0.02-0.05 µm. A 5-20 µm edge hone followed by PVD TiN or TiAlN coating extends tool life.
YN10 chemical composition (wt %)
Limits by weight percent from the governing specification, written the way the spec states them — a single maximum for impurities, a range for alloying elements, and the base element as balance. Nominal is the typical mid-range value.
| Element | Spec limit (wt %) | Nominal |
|---|---|---|
| Nibinder phase | 10 – 18 | 14 |
| Moadded as Mo or Mo₂C; improves wetting, forms core–rim structure | 6 – 12 | 9 |
| WCincreases toughness and thermal conductivity | 3 – 12 | 8 |
| TaCrefines grain, improves thermal fatigue resistance | 0 – 4 | 2 |
| Cosmall addition in some formulations | 0 – 4 | 1 |
| TiCmain hard phase; added as Ti(C,N) in some grades | ≥ 50 (balance) | — |
YN10 SHIP — frequently asked
What is YN10 SHIP used for?
YN10 SHIP is typically used for high-speed steel finishing, fine boring and precision turning inserts. In short: cermet, not WC-Co; excellent finish on steel; low density, brittle edge.
Is YN10 SHIP easy to machine?
Not especially — machinability is rated not recommended (3/100, worse than 95% of ceramic grades). After sintering, shape only by diamond-wheel grinding, EDM (the material is conductive) or laser; pre-sintered blanks can be rough-formed with carbide tools.
Can YN10 SHIP be welded?
Not fusion weldable. Braze to steel tool bodies with Ag-Cu-Ti or BAg-series filler in vacuum or by induction, cooling slowly because the CTE difference makes it crack-prone.

Can YN10 SHIP be formed, bent or molded?
Powder metallurgy route: spray granulation, die pressing, extrusion or injection moulding, dewaxing, then vacuum or low-pressure (sinter-HIP) sintering; shrinkage is about 18-22 %.
What is the maximum service temperature of YN10 SHIP?
YN10 SHIP is rated for continuous use to about 900°C (1,652 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
