What is YN05 UF?
YN05 UF is YN05 in the UF grade — choose the ultra-fine grain (<0.8 µm) TiCN-based structure for the sharpest edge and mirror surface quality in ultra-precision turning and mill-instead-of-grind work. The elastic modulus is 410 GPa (59.5 Msi). YN05 UF has a density of 6 g/cm³ (0.217 lb/in³), heavier than 65% of ceramic grades. It melts at 1,280°C (2,336 °F).
Advantages
- Polishes to a fine finish — 96/100, better than 99% of ceramic grades

Thermal5
YN05 UF is rated for continuous service to 1,050°C (1,922 °F). It conducts heat at 20 W/m·K (11.6 BTU/hr·ft·°F), worse than 55% of ceramic grades. Thermal expansion is 7.4 µm/m·K (4.11 µin/in·°F).
Electrical1
YN05 UF has an electrical resistivity of 8×10⁻⁷ Ω·m.
Chemical & Environmental2
Corrosion resistance is good (68/100), worse than 65% of ceramic grades.
Sustainability3
Producing a kilogram of YN05 UF takes about 210 MJ of energy and emits 15 kg of CO₂ — more than 64% of ceramic grades. Typical recycled content is 5%.
Manufacturability3
YN05 UF's machinability is not recommended (3/100, worse than 95% of ceramic grades).

Working with YN05 UF
Is YN05 easy to machine?
After sintering, only diamond-wheel grinding, EDM (conductive) or laser processing is possible; green blanks can be turned or milled before sintering.
Can YN05 be welded?
Not fusion weldable. Braze tips to steel bodies with silver-based (BAg) filler in vacuum or by induction and control the cooling rate closely, as CTE mismatch makes it more crack-sensitive than WC-based grades.
Can YN05 be formed, bent or molded?
Powder metallurgy: wet milling, spray drying, die pressing, extrusion or injection moulding, debinding, then vacuum or sinter-HIP densification at 1400-1470 °C.
What surface finishes work on YN05?
Diamond grinding plus polishing gives a mirror surface below Ra 0.05 µm. Precision edge preparation (T-land or honing) is required, and PVD TiN or TiAlN coatings can be added.

YN05 UF — frequently asked
What is YN05 UF used for?
YN05 UF is typically used for ultra-precision steel finishing, high-speed light cutting and fine surface finishing inserts. In short: ultra-fine cermet grade; best surface finish on steel; light finishing cuts only.
Is YN05 UF easy to machine?
Not especially — machinability is rated not recommended (3/100, worse than 95% of ceramic grades). After sintering, only diamond-wheel grinding, EDM (conductive) or laser processing is possible; green blanks can be turned or milled before sintering.
Can YN05 UF be welded?
Not fusion weldable. Braze tips to steel bodies with silver-based (BAg) filler in vacuum or by induction and control the cooling rate closely, as CTE mismatch makes it more crack-sensitive than WC-based grades.

Can YN05 UF be formed, bent or molded?
Powder metallurgy: wet milling, spray drying, die pressing, extrusion or injection moulding, debinding, then vacuum or sinter-HIP densification at 1400-1470 °C.
What is the maximum service temperature of YN05 UF?
YN05 UF is rated for continuous use to about 1,050°C (1,922 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
