Working with 3102-H24
Is 3102 easy to machine?
Soft and gummy — use polished high-rake carbide, high speed, generous coolant/lubricant and chip breakers to avoid built-up edge; harder H-tempers cut noticeably cleaner.
Can 3102 be welded?
Excellent for GTAW/GMAW and resistance welding with ER4043 or ER1100 filler; no HAZ quench cracking, but cold-worked tempers fully soften in the weld zone.
Can 3102 be formed, bent or molded?
Outstanding cold formability in O/H1x1 tempers — deep drawing, roll forming, tube bending and foil rolling; anneal at ~345 °C between heavy reductions.
What surface finishes work on 3102?
Takes clear and dyed sulfuric anodize well (slightly grey cast from Mn constituents), plus chromate/chrome-free conversion coatings, brazing clad and painted coil finishes.
