What is AWS BMg-1?

AWS BMg-1 is a magnesium welding and brazing filler of AZ61A composition (UNS M19001) standardised in AWS A5.19 as rod, wire and spooled electrode. It is used to weld and repair wrought and cast Mg-Al-Zn alloys such as AZ31B, AZ61A and AZ92A, where its higher aluminium and zinc content widens the freezing range and reduces hot-cracking sensitivity. Deposited or as-welded properties are about 95 MPa yield, 165 MPa tensile, 3% elongation and 63 HB, with service limited to roughly 120 °C and very low bare corrosion resistance (12). It is a consumable, not a structural product form; AZ92A filler is the alternative for higher-strength castings. AWS BMg-1 has a density of 1.82 g/cm³ (0.0658 lb/in³), heavier than 74% of magnesium alloy grades. It melts at 443°C (829 °F). AWS BMg-1 has a yield strength of 95 MPa (13.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 165 MPa (23.9 ksi) — weaker than 93% of magnesium alloy grades. Elongation at break is 3% and the elastic modulus is 45 GPa (6.53 Msi).

What is AWS BMg-1 used for?

  • GTAW and GMAW filler for magnesium structures
  • Repair welding of magnesium castings
  • Welding AZ31B sheet and extrusion fabrications

Working with AWS BMg-1

Is AWS BMg-1 easy to machine?

Cuts extremely freely with sharp, high-rake tools and no coolant misting; keep chips dry and away from water — magnesium fines are a fire hazard.

Can AWS BMg-1 be welded?

Use as GTAW/GMAW filler on AZ31B/AZ61A/AZ92A with pure Ar or Ar-He shielding, tight fit-up and low heat input to avoid hot cracking; braze at 600–620 °C where the base-metal solidus allows only ~20–30 °C of margin.

Can AWS BMg-1 be formed, bent or molded?

Supplied straightened or spooled; bend or coil warm (150–250 °C) since cold formability of Mg-9Al-2Zn is limited.

What surface finishes work on AWS BMg-1?

Remove all chloride/fluoride flux by hot-water and dilute chromic/nitric acid rinsing, then apply a conversion coating (ASTM D1732) plus epoxy primer; leaving flux residue guarantees rapid joint corrosion.
