What is AZ92A?
AZ92A is a higher-aluminum Mg-Al-Zn sand-casting alloy (UNS M11920) supplied in F, T4, T5, T6 and T61 conditions, and it is also the standard filler alloy for magnesium repair welding. It offers more strength, hardness and pressure tightness than AZ91: 145 MPa yield, 275 MPa tensile, 3% elongation and 84 HB, with 72 W/m·K conductivity and service to 150 °C. Machinability is the highest in the family at a score of 97. Elongation and weldability (score 55) are lower than AZ91E, high solidification shrinkage demands heavy risering, and all surfaces need conversion coating plus paint. AZ92A has a density of 1.82 g/cm³ (0.0658 lb/in³), heavier than 74% of magnesium alloy grades. It melts at 443°C (829 °F). AZ92A has a yield strength of 145 MPa (21 ksi) and a tensile strength of 275 MPa (39.9 ksi) — stronger than 51% of magnesium alloy grades. Elongation at break is 3% and the elastic modulus is 45 GPa (6.53 Msi).
What is AZ92A used for?
- Pressure-tight sand castings
- Industrial gearbox and pump housings
- Filler rod for AZ91 and AZ63 weld repair
- Permanent-mold machine components
- Plaster-cast tooling and prototype hardware
- Load-bearing equipment brackets
Limitations
- Low electrical conductivity — 11.5 % IACS, worse than 92% of magnesium alloy grades
- Limited ductility — 3%, worse than 85% of magnesium alloy grades

Working with AZ92A
Is AZ92A easy to machine?
Outstanding machinability at high speed with sharp positive-rake tools and light or no coolant — but fine chips/dust are a fire hazard, keep dry (never water-based mist), collect chips in covered steel bins and have Class D extinguisher on hand.
Can AZ92A be welded?
GTAW/GMAW in argon with AZ92A filler (also the standard filler for AZ91/AZ63 repairs); preheat thick sections, avoid restraint to prevent hot cracking and stress-relieve or re-age after welding.
Can AZ92A be formed, bent or molded?
A casting alloy only — sand, permanent-mould and plaster casting with good fluidity and pressure tightness; use SF6-free cover gas (SO₂/HFC-134a), generous risering because of high solidification shrinkage; not cold formable.

What surface finishes work on AZ92A?
Not sulphuric-anodizable: apply chromate/chrome-free conversion coat, Dow 17/HAE or PEO anodic coating, then epoxy primer and topcoat; electrically isolate from steel, aluminium and copper fasteners to prevent galvanic attack.
