What is AS41A?

AS41A is an Mg-Al-Si high-pressure die-casting alloy (UNS M10410) in which Mg2Si precipitates raise creep resistance above the AZ and AM series at moderate temperature. As cast (F) it provides about 140 MPa yield, 225 MPa tensile, 6% elongation and 75 HB, with 68 W/m·K thermal conductivity and service to about 150 °C, and it machines at magnesium speeds (score 95). The silicon addition lowers fluidity, so minimum walls are thicker and cycles slower than AZ91D; weldability is poor (35) on porous castings and bare corrosion resistance is low (25). Rare-earth alloys such as AE42 are the usual step up for hotter creep duty. AS41A has a density of 1.77 g/cm³ (0.0639 lb/in³), lighter than 86% of magnesium alloy grades. It melts at 565°C (1,049 °F). AS41A has a yield strength of 140 MPa (20.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 225 MPa (32.6 ksi) — weaker than 61% of magnesium alloy grades. Elongation at break is 6% and the elastic modulus is 45 GPa (6.53 Msi).

What is AS41A used for?

  • Engine components
  • Transmission housings
  • Oil pans and sumps
  • Air-cooled engine crankcase covers
  • Powertrain brackets near heat sources
  • Compressor housings

Limitations

  • Poor heat conductor — 68 W/m·K (39.3 BTU/hr·ft·°F), worse than 81% of magnesium alloy grades
  • Difficult to weld — 35/100, worse than 80% of magnesium alloy grades

Working with AS41A

Is AS41A easy to machine?

Cuts extremely fast at high speed with low power and sharp positive-rake tools; keep chips coarse, avoid fine dry dust and use non-aqueous coolant to control fire risk.

Can AS41A be welded?

GTAW with AZ61/AZ92 filler is possible on clean sections, but die-cast porosity causes gas blowout — mechanical fastening or adhesive bonding is preferred for repairs.

Can AS41A be formed, bent or molded?

Hot-chamber/cold-chamber HPDC only; the Mg2Si-forming Si reduces fluidity and die soldering tolerance, so expect slightly slower cycles and thicker minimum walls than AZ91D.

What surface finishes work on AS41A?

Chromate-free conversion coat or anodize (Dow 17/HAE/PEO) plus an epoxy or powder topcoat is mandatory for corrosion service; insulate stainless/steel fasteners to prevent galvanic attack.
