What is HPFS 7980?

HPFS 7980 (Corning HPFS 7980) is a high-purity synthetic fused silica optimized for deep-UV service, offered in standard, KrF, ArF and 0A grades. It is used for lithography lens elements, excimer laser optics and precision windows because of its optical homogeneity and resistance to UV-induced damage, and is supplied as boules, sliced blanks and polished plates. Maximum service temperature is 900 °C and machinability is low (score 12), so only diamond and abrasive processes apply and finished blanks are expensive. Suprasil is the equivalent alternative from another supplier. HPFS 7980 has a density of 2.2 g/cm³ (0.0795 lb/in³), lighter than 91% of glass grades. It melts at 1,713°C (3,115 °F). HPFS 7980 has a tensile strength of 50 MPa (7.25 ksi), stronger than 59% of glass grades. Elongation at break is 0% and the elastic modulus is 72.7 GPa (10.5 Msi).

What is HPFS 7980 used for?

  • Lithography lenses
  • Excimer laser optics
  • Precision windows

Advantages

  • Good corrosion resistance — 95/100, better than 92% of glass grades
  • Lightweight — 2.2 g/cm³ (0.0795 lb/in³), better than 91% of glass grades

Working with HPFS 7980

Is HPFS 7980 easy to machine?

Diamond grinding, core drilling, ultrasonic and loose-abrasive lapping only; no conventional cutting — control subsurface damage before polishing.

Can HPFS 7980 be welded?

Joinable by H2/O2 torch or CO2-laser fusion and by optical contacting/frit bonding, but fusion locally destroys index homogeneity and adds strain, so it is avoided on precision optics.

Can HPFS 7980 be formed, bent or molded?

Hot slumping/pressing only above ~1600 °C in clean tooling; all blanks must be fine-annealed near 1040 °C and slow-cooled to remove stress birefringence.
