What is G10-ESD?

G10-ESD is a woven-glass-reinforced epoxy laminate of the G-10 type, made static-dissipative through conductive loading or an antistatic surface layer for controlled charge decay. It is used for jigs, nests and tooling in electronics assembly, supplied as flat sheet, rod and tube, with related conditions on file for flame-retardant V-0 and higher-temperature G11-ESD builds. Tensile strength is 300 MPa and maximum service temperature 130 °C; the trade-offs are low machinability (score 38), heavy tool wear from glass dust, no weldability and no post-forming. Standard G-10/FR-4 is the cheaper choice where ESD control is not required. G10-ESD has a density of 1.85 g/cm³ (0.0668 lb/in³), heavier than 67% of composite grades. Its glass-transition temperature is 120°C (248 °F). G10-ESD has a tensile strength of 300 MPa (43.5 ksi), stronger than 53% of composite grades. Elongation at break is 2% and the elastic modulus is 20 GPa (2.9 Msi).

What is G10-ESD used for?

  • ESD assembly jigs
  • PCB test and probe fixtures
  • Board-handling nests and locating plates
  • Insulating standoffs in electronics test rigs
  • Static-safe magazine rails and guides
  • Machine tooling and mounting plates

Advantages

  • Low moisture uptake — 0.12%, better than 78% of composite grades

Limitations

  • Hard to polish — 25/100, worse than 76% of composite grades

Working with G10-ESD

Is G10-ESD easy to machine?

Machine dry with carbide or PCD tooling, high speed / moderate feed, sharp edges and rigid clamping; extract the abrasive glass dust and expect tool life well below that of plastics.

Can G10-ESD be welded?

Not weldable — thermoset laminate; join by bonding with epoxy/acrylic structural adhesive or by mechanical fasteners with washers to spread load.

Can G10-ESD be formed, bent or molded?

Supplied fully cured as flat sheet, rod or tube; no post-forming possible, so all geometry comes from machining, waterjetting or punching (thin sheet only, heated punch).

What surface finishes work on G10-ESD?

Edges should be deburred and sealed with epoxy to limit moisture wicking; no plating or anodizing — for coated antistatic grades avoid sanding or solvent wiping the functional surface.
