Steel P2 vs P4
Steel · grade comparison
Steel P2 and P4 are both steel grades. P2 is the stronger of the two: yield strength 330 MPa (47.9 ksi) against 300 MPa (43.5 ksi) for P4, about 10% more. P4 is harder — 122 HB against 110 HB for P2 — which matters for wear surfaces and threads. P2 conducts heat better (40 W/m·K vs 26 W/m·K). On the shop floor, P2 machines more easily (very good vs good), P2 welds better (good vs fair), and P2 forms better (very good vs good).
P2Choose it when strength drives the design, or when the part is machined in volume.
P4Choose it when surface hardness matters.
P2 vs P4: propertiesHow to read these bars
- One bar per material. A full bar is the highest value among all steel grades in the FabDigit library; each bar is drawn as a share of that.
- The better value (by the usual engineering direction) is in bold. Rows with no direction — density, thermal conductivity — have no bold.
- Values are typical room-temperature figures for the condition named on each card.
- Confirm against the certified mill or resin datasheet before design release.

P2 vs P4 — frequently asked
Is P2 stronger than P4?
Yes. P2 has a typical yield strength of 330 MPa (47.9 ksi) against 300 MPa (43.5 ksi) for P4 — about 10% more. Tensile strength is 510 MPa (74 ksi) vs 500 MPa (72.5 ksi).
Which is cheaper, P2 or P4?
Both sit in the same relative cost tier ($$$, premium); the part price will be decided by machining time, tolerance and quantity rather than by the material.
Which is easier to machine, P2 or P4?
P2. Its machinability rates very good (70/100) against good (60/100) for P4; for welding the order is P2 first (good, 60/100) then P4 (fair, 45/100).
