Steel P1 vs P4

Steel · grade comparison

Steel P1 and P4 are both steel grades. P4 is the stronger of the two: yield strength 300 MPa (43.5 ksi) against 240 MPa (34.8 ksi) for P1, about 25% more; tensile strength follows at 500 MPa (72.5 ksi) vs 380 MPa (55.1 ksi). In exchange, P1 is the more ductile: elongation 35% versus 25% for P4. P4 runs hotter in service (400°C vs 350°C continuous) and P1 conducts heat better (50 W/m·K vs 26 W/m·K). On the shop floor, P1 welds better (excellent vs fair) and P1 sits in a lower cost tier (standard, $$) than P4 (premium, $$$).

P1Choose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when it will be welded.

P4Choose it when strength drives the design, or when the part sees heat.

P1 vs P4 — frequently asked

Is P4 stronger than P1?

Yes. P4 has a typical yield strength of 300 MPa (43.5 ksi) against 240 MPa (34.8 ksi) for P1 — about 25% more. Tensile strength is 500 MPa (72.5 ksi) vs 380 MPa (55.1 ksi).

Which is cheaper, P1 or P4?

P1 is the lower-cost material: it sits in the standard tier ($$) while P4 is premium ($$$). Part price depends far more on geometry, tolerance and quantity than on raw stock — upload a CAD file for a live quote.

Which welds better, P1 or P4?

P1. Its weldability rates excellent (85/100) against fair (45/100) for P4.
