Values for the HIP condition
What is YT5 HIP?
YT5 HIP is YT5 in the HIP condition — choose when pore-free structure and maximum transverse-rupture strength are needed for heavy interrupted cuts. The elastic modulus is 520 GPa (75.4 Msi). YT5 HIP has a density of 13.05 g/cm³ (0.471 lb/in³), heavier than 87% of ceramic grades. It melts at 1,320°C (2,408 °F).
Advantages
- Tough — resists crack growth — 12 MPa·√m (10.9 ksi·√in), better than 93% of ceramic grades
- Stiff — 520 GPa (75.4 Msi), better than 81% of ceramic grades
Limitations
- Needs corrosion protection — 40/100, worse than 96% of ceramic grades
- Heavy — 13.05 g/cm³ (0.471 lb/in³), worse than 87% of ceramic grades
- High embodied carbon — 25 kg CO₂/kg, worse than 78% of ceramic grades
YT5 HIP properties
Typical room-temperature values for YT5 HIP; 6 are specific to this condition. Other listed values are YT5 reference data and may not represent this condition. Bars are the position among ceramic grades.
Physical3
YT5 HIP has a density of 13.05 g/cm³ (0.471 lb/in³), heavier than 87% of ceramic grades. It melts at 1,320°C (2,408 °F).
Mechanical9
The elastic modulus is 520 GPa (75.4 Msi).
Thermal5
YT5 HIP is rated for continuous service to 900°C (1,652 °F). It conducts heat at 42 W/m·K (24.3 BTU/hr·ft·°F), better than 68% of ceramic grades. Thermal expansion is 6.2 µm/m·K (3.44 µin/in·°F).
Electrical1
YT5 HIP has an electrical resistivity of 3.5×10⁻⁷ Ω·m.
Chemical & Environmental2
Corrosion resistance is fair (40/100), worse than 96% of ceramic grades.
Sustainability3
Producing a kilogram of YT5 HIP takes about 350 MJ of energy and emits 25 kg of CO₂ — more than 81% of ceramic grades. Typical recycled content is 25%.
Manufacturability3
YT5 HIP's machinability is not recommended (5/100, worse than 59% of ceramic grades).
Values are nominal handbook figures for design screening. Confirm any required mill or lot documentation when quoting.
Working with YT5 HIP
Is YT5 easy to machine?
Sintered YT5 cannot be cut conventionally; shape it by diamond wheel grinding, EDM or laser only.
Can YT5 be welded?
Not welded. Brazed to steel tool bodies by vacuum or induction brazing with silver-copper (BAg-series) filler, with controlled cooling to prevent braze cracking.
Can YT5 be formed, bent or molded?
Powder pressed (die pressing or extrusion) then vacuum or low-pressure sintered, with about 18–20 % linear shrinkage; complex geometries rely on near-net-shape pressing.
What surface finishes work on YT5?
Diamond grinding followed by lapping and polishing gives mirror faces. Cutting tools are usually CVD or PVD coated with TiN, TiCN or Al2O3 to raise wear resistance.
YT5 chemical composition (wt %)
Limits by weight percent from the governing specification, written the way the spec states them — a single maximum for impurities, a range for alloying elements, and the base element as balance. Nominal is the typical mid-range value.
| Element | Spec limit (wt %) | Nominal |
|---|---|---|
| TiCtitanium carbide; raises crater wear resistance and red hardness | 4 – 6 | 5 |
| Cocobalt binder phase; controls toughness | 9 – 11 | 10 |
| WCtungsten carbide base with minor (W,Ti)C solid solution | balance |
YT5 HIP — frequently asked
What is YT5 HIP used for?
YT5 HIP is typically used for steel roughing, general turning of carbon steel and heavy interrupted cuts. In short: toughest YT steel grade; ISO P roughing carbide; 5 % TiC addition.
Is YT5 HIP easy to machine?
Not especially — machinability is rated not recommended (5/100, worse than 59% of ceramic grades). Sintered YT5 cannot be cut conventionally; shape it by diamond wheel grinding, EDM or laser only.
Can YT5 HIP be welded?
Not welded. Brazed to steel tool bodies by vacuum or induction brazing with silver-copper (BAg-series) filler, with controlled cooling to prevent braze cracking.

Powder pressed (die pressing or extrusion) then vacuum or low-pressure sintered, with about 18–20 % linear shrinkage; complex geometries rely on near-net-shape pressing.
What is the maximum service temperature of YT5 HIP?
YT5 HIP is rated for continuous use to about 900°C (1,652 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
