Working with 8006-H12
Is 8006 easy to machine?
Rarely machined; if slit/blanked, use sharp carbide tooling, high rake and lubricant — the soft matrix with hard Fe-intermetallics burrs easily and abrades edges.
Can 8006 be welded?
Weldable by GTAW/GMAW with 1100 or 4043 filler and by resistance/ultrasonic methods; heat-affected zone reverts to O-temper strength, and foil gauges are normally sealed rather than welded.
Can 8006 be formed, bent or molded?
Excellent deep-draw and wall-ironing behaviour, especially in O/H22/H24; the fine Al-Fe-Mn dispersoids give higher elongation and pinhole resistance than 1000 series at equal strength.
What surface finishes work on 8006?
Takes chromate-free conversion coatings, lacquers and PET/PP laminations well; anodizing gives a dark grey non-decorative film, so painted or coated finishes are preferred.
