What is SHG Zinc?

SHG Zinc is Special High Grade primary zinc to ASTM B6 (UNS Z13001, also designated Zn99.995), the highest-purity zinc ingot grade at 99.99 %+ Zn. It is bought as ingot, jumbo blocks, cast anodes, rolled sheet, extrusion, wire and powder, and is the base feedstock wherever impurity control governs — die-casting alloys, galvanizing baths and brass alloying. As a pure metal it is weak (20 MPa yield, 30 MPa tensile, 20 % elongation, 30 HB) with 116 W/m·K, 28.3 % IACS and a 100 °C service limit, so it is not used for loaded parts. Prime Western zinc is the cheaper alternative where purity is not critical. SHG Zinc has a density of 7.14 g/cm³ (0.258 lb/in³), heavier than 82% of zinc alloy grades. It melts at 420°C (787 °F). SHG Zinc has a yield strength of 20 MPa (2.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 30 MPa (4.35 ksi) — weaker than 96% of zinc alloy grades. Elongation at break is 20% and the elastic modulus is 96 GPa (13.9 Msi).

What is SHG Zinc used for?

  • hot-dip galvanizing baths
  • zamak/ZA alloy feedstock
  • brass and bronze alloying
  • zinc oxide production

Advantages

  • Readily welded — 40/100, better than 93% of zinc alloy grades
  • Ductile — tolerates forming and impact — 20%, better than 79% of zinc alloy grades

Limitations

  • Low strength — 20 MPa (2.9 ksi), worse than 96% of zinc alloy grades
  • Difficult to machine — 60/100, worse than 96% of zinc alloy grades
  • Hard to polish — 55/100, worse than 79% of zinc alloy grades

Working with SHG Zinc

Is SHG Zinc easy to machine?

Cuts easily but smears — use sharp, high-rake, polished tools, high speed, light feeds and no lubricant needed beyond a light oil; avoid built-up edge.

Can SHG Zinc be welded?

Rarely welded; TIG/oxy-fuel with pure-zinc filler works on rolled sheet, but the low boiling point (907 °C) means heavy zinc-oxide fume — extraction is mandatory.

Can SHG Zinc be formed, bent or molded?

Cast ingot is brittle; rolled zinc bends and deep-draws best at 40–120 °C and must be formed with the grain direction in mind because of strong basal texture.

What surface finishes work on SHG Zinc?

Not anodisable — protect with chromate/trivalent passivation, phosphate + paint, or leave to weather to a self-limiting carbonate patina; solders readily with zinc-chloride flux.
