What is R04210?
R04210 is commercial-purity unalloyed niobium to ASTM B393 Type 2, with relaxed interstitial limits compared with the reactor grade, available annealed, stress-relieved, cold-worked and as electron-beam-melted ingot. Engineers pick it for chemical resistance and exceptional ductility — about 115 MPa yield, 200 MPa tensile, 40% elongation and 70 HB — which supports deep drawing, spinning and heavy cold reduction of sheet, strip, tube and wire. Bare service in air is limited to about 400 °C because niobium oxidises and picks up oxygen and nitrogen; move to Nb-1Zr (R04251 or R04261) when more strength or higher-temperature capability is needed. R04210 has a density of 8.57 g/cm³ (0.31 lb/in³), heavier than 51% of refractory metal grades. It melts at 2,468°C (4,474 °F). R04210 has a yield strength of 115 MPa (16.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 200 MPa (29 ksi) — weaker than 100% of refractory metal grades. Elongation at break is 40% and the elastic modulus is 103 GPa (14.9 Msi).
What is R04210 used for?
- Chemical process vessels
- Superconducting RF components
- Electronic capacitor anodes
- Corrosion-resistant liners
Advantages
- Forms and bends easily — 95/100, better than 99% of refractory metal grades
- Ductile — tolerates forming and impact — 40%, better than 96% of refractory metal grades
- Low embodied carbon — 22 kg CO₂/kg, better than 83% of refractory metal grades
Limitations
- Low strength — 115 MPa (16.7 ksi), worse than 100% of refractory metal grades

Working with R04210
Is R04210 easy to machine?
Gummy and galling-prone: use sharp, positive-rake carbide or HSS tooling, slow speeds, heavy feeds, flood chlorinated or sulfurized coolant, and avoid dwelling to prevent smearing and work hardening.
Can R04210 be welded?
GTAW/EBW/laser weld readily but must be done in a vacuum chamber or with complete trailing/backing inert gas — any O, N or H pickup above ~250 °C embrittles the weld; use Nb or Nb-1Zr filler.
Can R04210 be formed, bent or molded?
Outstanding cold formability — deep drawing, spinning and >90 % cold rolling reduction are routine with intermediate vacuum anneals at 1100–1300 °C; use non-galling tooling coatings or lubricated interleaf.
