What is OSB?

OSB is a structural panel of oriented wood strands bonded with resin under heat and pressure, classified as OSB/1 to OSB/4 in EN 300 and covered by ASTM D5456, ASTM D2718 and GB/T 22349. It is chosen where plywood-like sheathing performance is needed at lower cost, supplied as large flat panels, sometimes tongue-and-groove or factory-coated. In-plane properties are lower than plywood at about 12 MPa tensile strength and 3.5 GPa modulus, density is higher at 0.64 g/cm3, and maximum service temperature is 60 C. Edge swelling in wet exposure and a corrosion/decay score of 30 mean OSB/3 or OSB/4 and sealed edges are required in humid service; plywood is the alternative when a finished face or higher stiffness is needed. OSB has a density of 0.64 g/cm³ (0.0231 lb/in³), lighter than 60% of natural material grades. OSB has a tensile strength of 12 MPa (1.74 ksi), weaker than 68% of natural material grades. Elongation at break is 1% and the elastic modulus is 3.5 GPa (0.508 Msi).

Working with OSB

Is OSB easy to machine?

Cuts and routs easily with carbide-tipped saws and spiral bits, but resin and grit are abrasive — expect short tool life and heavy dust extraction; score cuts to limit edge chip-out.

Can OSB be welded?

Not weldable; join by nails/staples/screws (edge distance ≥ 8 mm), construction adhesive or PVA/PU glue on faces.

Can OSB be formed, bent or molded?

Supplied as flat rigid panel; only mild cold curving over large radii, no thermoforming — panels are hot-pressed at the mill.

What surface finishes work on OSB?

Sand and seal or prime heavily before painting (strand texture and resin telegraph through); edges need sealing against moisture swell, or use factory-coated/T&G panels.
