Titanium C-1 vs ZTC4

Titanium · grade comparison

Titanium C-1 and ZTC4 are both titanium grades. ZTC4 is the stronger of the two: yield strength 840 MPa (122 ksi) against 210 MPa (30.5 ksi) for C-1, about 4.0 times as much; tensile strength follows at 910 MPa (132 ksi) vs 300 MPa (43.5 ksi). In exchange, C-1 is the more ductile: elongation 20% versus 8% for ZTC4, and ZTC4 is harder (325 HB vs 120 HB). ZTC4 is stiffer (110 GPa vs 103 GPa) and ZTC4 runs hotter in service (350°C vs 300°C continuous). On the shop floor, C-1 machines more easily (fair vs poor) and C-1 welds better (excellent vs very good).

C-1Choose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part is machined in volume.

ZTC4Choose it when strength drives the design, or when the part sees heat.

C-1 vs ZTC4 — frequently asked

Is ZTC4 stronger than C-1?

Yes. ZTC4 has a typical yield strength of 840 MPa (122 ksi) against 210 MPa (30.5 ksi) for C-1 — about 4.0 times as much. Tensile strength is 910 MPa (132 ksi) vs 300 MPa (43.5 ksi).

Which is cheaper, C-1 or ZTC4?

Both sit in the same relative cost tier ($$$$, high); the part price will be decided by machining time, tolerance and quantity rather than by the material.

Which is easier to machine, C-1 or ZTC4?

C-1. Its machinability rates fair (42/100) against poor (18/100) for ZTC4; for welding the order is C-1 first (excellent, 88/100) then ZTC4 (very good, 75/100).
