Steel Y12-A vs Y12-N
Steel · Y12 temper comparison
Y12-A and Y12-N are two conditions of the same steel grade, Y12: A (solution annealed) versus N (normalized). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. Y12-N is the stronger of the two: yield strength 270 MPa (39.2 ksi) against 230 MPa (33.4 ksi) for Y12-A, about 17% more; tensile strength follows at 440 MPa (63.8 ksi) vs 400 MPa (58 ksi). Y12-N is harder — 130 HB against 115 HB for Y12-A — which matters for wear surfaces and threads. Y12-N runs hotter in service (400°C vs 350°C continuous).
Y12-NChoose it when strength drives the design, or when surface hardness matters.
Y12-A vs Y12-N: propertiesHow to read these bars
- One bar per material. A full bar is the highest value among all steel grades in the FabDigit library; each bar is drawn as a share of that.
- The better value (by the usual engineering direction) is in bold. Rows with no direction — density, thermal conductivity — have no bold.
- Values are typical room-temperature figures for the condition named on each card.
- Confirm against the certified mill or resin datasheet before design release.

Y12-A vs Y12-N — frequently asked
Is Y12-N stronger than Y12-A?
Yes. Y12-N has a typical yield strength of 270 MPa (39.2 ksi) against 230 MPa (33.4 ksi) for Y12-A — about 17% more. Tensile strength is 440 MPa (63.8 ksi) vs 400 MPa (58 ksi).
Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, A or N?
CD is the default Y12 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither A nor N). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.
When should I choose Y12-A over Y12-N?
Pick Y12-N when strength drives the design, or when surface hardness matters.

Upload a CAD file and FabDigit prices the part in Y12-A and Y12-N side by side — material, machining time, tolerance and finish in one quote. Certified material data ships with the order on request.
