Steel Y12-CH vs Y12-N

Steel · Y12 temper comparison

Y12-CH and Y12-N are two conditions of the same steel grade, Y12: CH (carburized and hardened) versus N (normalized). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. Y12-CH is the stronger of the two: yield strength 400 MPa (58 ksi) against 270 MPa (39.2 ksi) for Y12-N, about 48% more; tensile strength follows at 600 MPa (87 ksi) vs 440 MPa (63.8 ksi). In exchange, Y12-N is the more ductile: elongation 28% versus 12% for Y12-CH, and Y12-CH is harder (160 HB vs 130 HB). Y12-N runs hotter in service (400°C vs 350°C continuous). On the shop floor, Y12-N machines more easily (very good vs poor) and Y12-N welds better (poor vs not recommended).

Y12-CH vs Y12-N — frequently asked

Is Y12-CH stronger than Y12-N?

Yes. Y12-CH has a typical yield strength of 400 MPa (58 ksi) against 270 MPa (39.2 ksi) for Y12-N — about 48% more. Tensile strength is 600 MPa (87 ksi) vs 440 MPa (63.8 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, CH or N?

CD is the default Y12 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither CH nor N). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, Y12-CH or Y12-N?

Y12-N. Its machinability rates very good (76/100) against poor (25/100) for Y12-CH; for welding the order is Y12-N first (poor, 25/100) then Y12-CH (not recommended, 10/100).
