Steel Y12-A vs Y12-CH

Steel · Y12 temper comparison

Y12-A and Y12-CH are two conditions of the same steel grade, Y12: A (solution annealed) versus CH (carburized and hardened). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. Y12-CH is the stronger of the two: yield strength 400 MPa (58 ksi) against 230 MPa (33.4 ksi) for Y12-A, about 74% more; tensile strength follows at 600 MPa (87 ksi) vs 400 MPa (58 ksi). In exchange, Y12-A is the more ductile: elongation 30% versus 12% for Y12-CH, and Y12-CH is harder (160 HB vs 115 HB). On the shop floor, Y12-A machines more easily (very good vs poor) and Y12-A welds better (poor vs not recommended).

Y12-A vs Y12-CH — frequently asked

Is Y12-CH stronger than Y12-A?

Yes. Y12-CH has a typical yield strength of 400 MPa (58 ksi) against 230 MPa (33.4 ksi) for Y12-A — about 74% more. Tensile strength is 600 MPa (87 ksi) vs 400 MPa (58 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, A or CH?

CD is the default Y12 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither A nor CH). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, Y12-A or Y12-CH?

Y12-A. Its machinability rates very good (72/100) against poor (25/100) for Y12-CH; for welding the order is Y12-A first (poor, 25/100) then Y12-CH (not recommended, 10/100).
