Steel SGCC-CR vs SGCC-SP

Steel · SGCC temper comparison

SGCC-CR and SGCC-SP are two conditions of the same steel grade, SGCC: CR (cold rolled) versus SP (skin-passed (temper rolled) after coating). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. SGCC-SP is the stronger of the two: yield strength 255 MPa (37 ksi) against 210 MPa (30.5 ksi) for SGCC-CR, about 21% more; tensile strength follows at 330 MPa (47.9 ksi) vs 310 MPa (45 ksi). In exchange, SGCC-CR is the more ductile: elongation 38% versus 32% for SGCC-SP, and SGCC-SP is harder (100 HB vs 88 HB). SGCC-CR runs hotter in service (350°C vs 200°C continuous). On the shop floor, SGCC-CR welds better (excellent vs very good).

SGCC-CR vs SGCC-SP — frequently asked

Is SGCC-SP stronger than SGCC-CR?

Yes. SGCC-SP has a typical yield strength of 255 MPa (37 ksi) against 210 MPa (30.5 ksi) for SGCC-CR — about 21% more. Tensile strength is 330 MPa (47.9 ksi) vs 310 MPa (45 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, CR or SP?

HR is the default SGCC condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither CR nor SP). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, SGCC-CR or SGCC-SP?

SGCC-SP. Its machinability rates very good (72/100) against good (65/100) for SGCC-CR; for welding the order is SGCC-CR first (excellent, 90/100) then SGCC-SP (very good, 72/100).

Upload a CAD file and FabDigit prices the part in SGCC-CR and SGCC-SP side by side — material, machining time, tolerance and finish in one quote. Certified material data ships with the order on request.

Typical handbook values for the conditions named above, normalised for comparison. Hardness on non-Brinell scales is converted approximately for charting only. Request certified data with your order for design-critical properties.
