Steel D3 vs W1

Steel · grade comparison

Steel D3 and W1 are both steel grades, both tool steel. D3 is the stronger of the two: tensile strength 800 MPa (116 ksi) against 760 MPa (110 ksi) for W1, about 5% more. In exchange, W1 is the more ductile: elongation 22% versus 14% for D3, and D3 is harder (225 HB vs 200 HB). W1 runs hotter in service (300°C vs 200°C continuous) and W1 conducts heat better (48 W/m·K vs 20 W/m·K). On the shop floor, W1 machines more easily (fair vs poor).

D3Choose it when strength drives the design.

W1Choose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part sees heat.

D3 vs W1 — frequently asked

Is D3 stronger than W1?

Yes. D3 has a typical tensile strength of 800 MPa (116 ksi) against 760 MPa (110 ksi) for W1 — about 5% more.

Which is cheaper, D3 or W1?

Both sit in the same relative cost tier ($$$, premium); the part price will be decided by machining time, tolerance and quantity rather than by the material.

Which is easier to machine, D3 or W1?

W1. Its machinability rates fair (45/100) against poor (25/100) for D3.
