Steel A9 vs O1

Steel · grade comparison

Steel A9 and O1 are both steel grades. A9 is the stronger of the two: tensile strength 745 MPa (108 ksi) against 690 MPa (100 ksi) for O1, about 8% more. In exchange, O1 is the more ductile: elongation 25% versus 22% for A9, and A9 is harder (220 HB vs 200 HB). O1 runs hotter in service (400°C vs 200°C continuous) and O1 conducts heat better (35 W/m·K vs 24 W/m·K). On the shop floor, A9 machines more easily (good vs fair) and A9 welds better (30 vs 20 out of 100).

A9Choose it when strength drives the design, or when the part is machined in volume.

O1Choose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part sees heat.

A9 vs O1 — frequently asked

Is A9 stronger than O1?

Yes. A9 has a typical tensile strength of 745 MPa (108 ksi) against 690 MPa (100 ksi) for O1 — about 8% more.

Which is cheaper, A9 or O1?

Both sit in the same relative cost tier ($$$$, high); the part price will be decided by machining time, tolerance and quantity rather than by the material.

Which is easier to machine, A9 or O1?

A9. Its machinability rates good (55/100) against fair (45/100) for O1; for welding the order is A9 first (poor, 30/100) then O1 (poor, 20/100).
