Stainless Steel SUH1-A vs SUH1-CD

Stainless Steel · SUH1 temper comparison

SUH1-A and SUH1-CD are two conditions of the same stainless steel grade, SUH1: A (solution annealed) versus CD (cold drawn). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. SUH1-CD is the stronger of the two: yield strength 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) against 450 MPa (65.3 ksi) for SUH1-A, about 38% more; tensile strength follows at 860 MPa (125 ksi) vs 760 MPa (110 ksi). In exchange, SUH1-A is the more ductile: elongation 22% versus 14% for SUH1-CD, and SUH1-CD is harder (265 HB vs 230 HB). SUH1-A runs hotter in service (600°C vs 550°C continuous) and SUH1-CD conducts heat better (24.5 W/m·K vs 21 W/m·K).

SUH1-AChoose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part sees heat.

SUH1-A vs SUH1-CD — frequently asked

Is SUH1-CD stronger than SUH1-A?

Yes. SUH1-CD has a typical yield strength of 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) against 450 MPa (65.3 ksi) for SUH1-A — about 38% more. Tensile strength is 860 MPa (125 ksi) vs 760 MPa (110 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, A or CD?

QT is the default SUH1 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither A nor CD). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

When should I choose SUH1-A over SUH1-CD?

Pick SUH1-A when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part sees heat. Pick SUH1-CD when strength drives the design.

Upload a CAD file and FabDigit prices the part in SUH1-A and SUH1-CD side by side — material, machining time, tolerance and finish in one quote. Certified material data ships with the order on request.

Typical handbook values for the conditions named above, normalised for comparison. Hardness on non-Brinell scales is converted approximately for charting only. Request certified data with your order for design-critical properties.
