What is TiN PS?

TiN PS is TiN heat treated to PS — lower-cost route for larger or complex bulk shapes where some residual porosity and lower hardness are acceptable. The elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi). TiN PS has a density of 5 g/cm³ (0.181 lb/in³), heavier than 51% of ceramic grades. It melts at 2,950°C (5,342 °F). HP is the default condition FabDigit quotes; PS is available on request or by drawing note.

Working with TiN PS

Is TiN easy to machine?

Bulk TiN is machined only by diamond grinding, lapping or laser; because it is electrically conductive it can also be wire/sink EDM'd — a key advantage over insulating nitrides.

Can TiN be welded?

Not weldable; joined by active-metal brazing (Ti/Zr-containing filler), diffusion bonding or mechanical clamping.

Can TiN be formed, bent or molded?

Shaped by uniaxial/CIP pressing then hot-pressing or SPS at 1650–2000 °C (pressureless sintering needs Ni/Co aid); coatings are produced by cathodic-arc/sputter PVD at 200–500 °C or CVD at 900–1050 °C in N₂/TiCl₄.

What surface finishes work on TiN?

Substrate must be polished before coating — PVD TiN replicates the surface; gold film can be polished, passivated or over-coated (TiCN/TiAlN) and is stripped chemically in H₂O₂-based baths for recoating.

TiN PS — frequently asked

What is TiN PS used for?

TiN PS is typically used for cutting tool PVD coatings, wear-resistant coatings, decorative gold-tone finishes, diffusion barrier layers and medical implant coatings. In short: conductive, EDM-able nitride; standard gold tool coating; 600 °C oxidation limit.

Is TiN PS easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated not recommended (10/100, better than 76% of ceramic grades). Bulk TiN is machined only by diamond grinding, lapping or laser; because it is electrically conductive it can also be wire/sink EDM'd — a key advantage over insulating nitrides.

What is the maximum service temperature of TiN PS?

TiN PS is rated for continuous use to about 550°C (1,022 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
