What is CVD Diamond TM?
CVD Diamond TM is CVD Diamond in the TM condition — choose the high-purity, low-defect growth when thermal conductivity must reach 1800 W/m·K — heat spreaders for GaN, laser-diode and RF devices. CVD Diamond TM has a tensile strength of 450 MPa (65.3 ksi), stronger than 76% of ceramic grades. Elongation at break is 0% and the elastic modulus is 1,100 GPa (159.5 Msi). CVD Diamond TM has a density of 3.51 g/cm³ (0.127 lb/in³), lighter than 68% of ceramic grades. It melts at 3,550°C (6,422 °F). MG is the default condition FabDigit quotes; TM is available on request or by drawing note.

Working with CVD Diamond TM
Is CVD Diamond easy to machine?
Conventional cutting and grinding are ineffective: shapes are cut with picosecond or nanosecond lasers, conductive BDD grades can be wire EDM'd, and final size comes from diamond-wheel grinding and chemical-mechanical polishing.
Can CVD Diamond be welded?
Not fusion weldable; vacuum braze with Ti/Cu-Ag active fillers (TiCuSil, CuSil-ABA) at 750–850 °C, or metallize with Ti/Pt/Au first and then soft-solder or AuSn eutectic bond.
Can CVD Diamond be formed, bent or molded?
Near-net shape comes from CVD growth: deposition onto patterned Si, Mo or W substrates followed by liftoff, giving thick films of 0.1–2 mm and large-area plates up to 100–150 mm diameter.
What surface finishes work on CVD Diamond?
After laser removal of the substrate face, both sides are lapped and polished to Ra < 10 nm; optical parts receive antireflection layers such as DLC or ThF₄, and heat-sink parts are Ti/Pt/Au metallized for soldering.

CVD Diamond TM — frequently asked
What is CVD Diamond TM used for?
CVD Diamond TM is typically used for cutting tool coatings/inserts, heat spreaders for laser diodes, wire-drawing dies and optical windows. In short: highest thermal conductivity solid; hardest available tool surface; EDM-capable in doped grade.
What is the tensile strength of CVD Diamond TM?
CVD Diamond TM has a typical tensile strength of 450 MPa (65.3 ksi) — stronger than 76% of ceramic grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 5 listed tempers.
Is CVD Diamond TM easy to machine?
Not especially — machinability is rated not recommended (2/100, worse than 100% of ceramic grades). Conventional cutting and grinding are ineffective: shapes are cut with picosecond or nanosecond lasers, conductive BDD grades can be wire EDM'd, and final size comes from diamond-wheel grinding and chemical-mechanical polishing.

What is the maximum service temperature of CVD Diamond TM?
CVD Diamond TM is rated for continuous use to about 600°C (1,112 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
