What is EG Carbon Brush?

EG Carbon Brush is an electrographitic brush material produced from coke and pitch and graphitised at high temperature, classified as EG under JIS C2802 and in the D-type series of GB/T 1416, with EG-I and EG-HD variants. It is chosen for low friction, stable commutation and good film formation on medium- and high-speed machines, and is supplied as machined brush blanks and slip-ring contact blocks. Its higher electrical resistance limits current density, and service is capped near 350 °C. For low-voltage, high-current duty use a metal-graphite (MG) brush instead. EG Carbon Brush has a density of 1.65 g/cm³ (0.0596 lb/in³), lighter than 95% of ceramic grades. It melts at 3,650°C (6,602 °F). EG Carbon Brush has a tensile strength of 14 MPa (2.03 ksi), weaker than 91% of ceramic grades. The elastic modulus is 10 GPa (1.45 Msi).

What is EG Carbon Brush used for?

  • motor and generator brushes
  • slip-ring contacts
  • traction motors

Advantages

Working with EG Carbon Brush

Is EG Carbon Brush easy to machine?

Machines very easily dry with sharp carbide or PCD tooling — no coolant, but vacuum dust extraction and edge support are mandatory to avoid chipping.

Can EG Carbon Brush be welded?

Not weldable; brush shunts are attached by tamping copper stranded wire into a drilled hole with copper powder, or by soldering to a metallized pad.

Can EG Carbon Brush be formed, bent or molded?

Formed by mixing coke/pitch, pressing or extruding a green block, baking ~1000 °C, then graphitizing at 2500–2800 °C; final shape is ground/milled from stock, not net-shape formed.

What surface finishes work on EG Carbon Brush?

Bedded to the commutator with abrasive brush-seating stone; surfaces may be resin-impregnated, copper-plated at the top face, or sealed against dusting.

How much does EG Carbon Brush cost?

EG Carbon Brush is a high-cost ceramic ($$$$), pricier than about 78% of the materials FabDigit quotes. Part price depends far more on geometry, tolerance and quantity than on the raw stock — upload a CAD file for a live quote.
