What is ZSnSb4-4?
ZSnSb4-4 is a low-antimony tin-base Babbitt to GB/T 1174, with a softer, tougher tin matrix and fewer hard SbSn crystals than the higher-antimony grades. It suits moderately loaded bearings, bushings and slide linings and is supplied as ingot for chill, static or centrifugal casting onto steel or bronze backings. Default as-cast values are 62 MPa tensile, 30 MPa yield, 8% elongation and 20 HB, with service to about 120 °C. Load capacity is the lowest of the GB/T tin Babbitts and the alloy is not fusion weldable; move to ZSnSb8-4 or ZSnSb11-6 for higher unit pressures. ZSnSb4-4 has a density of 7.34 g/cm³ (0.265 lb/in³), lighter than 87% of solder & low-melting alloy grades. It melts at 223°C (433 °F). ZSnSb4-4 has a yield strength of 30 MPa (4.35 ksi) and a tensile strength of 62 MPa (8.99 ksi) — stronger than 61% of solder & low-melting alloy grades. Elongation at break is 8% and the elastic modulus is 51 GPa (7.4 Msi).

Working with ZSnSb4-4
Is ZSnSb4-4 easy to machine?
Very easy to cut but gummy — use sharp, high-rake, well-polished tools, high speed, light feed and flood lubricant; final bore usually diamond-bored or hand-scraped.
Can ZSnSb4-4 be welded?
Not fusion welded; linings are repaired by local re-tinning and re-pouring, or by low-heat babbitt torch build-up with the same alloy.
Can ZSnSb4-4 be formed, bent or molded?
Cast only: pre-tin the steel/bronze shell with pure tin flux, pour at about 430–460 °C with the shell preheated ~250 °C, and chill from the back to avoid shrinkage and Cu–Sb segregation.
