What is XXXPC?

XXXPC is an oil-resistant punching-grade phenolic-paper laminate to ASTM D709 Grade/Type XXXPC. It is used for components that must retain insulating properties when immersed in transformer or switch oil, and is supplied as sheet, copper-clad sheet and rod. Tensile strength is 110 MPa with a maximum service temperature of 120 °C; the cured laminate cannot be re-formed and cut edges need sealing against moisture. Choose XXXP where oil immersion is not a requirement, or epoxy-glass G-10/3240 where higher mechanical strength is needed. XXXPC has a density of 1.35 g/cm³ (0.0488 lb/in³), lighter than 75% of composite grades. Its glass-transition temperature is 150°C (302 °F). XXXPC has a tensile strength of 110 MPa (16 ksi), weaker than 64% of composite grades. Elongation at break is 1.5% and the elastic modulus is 8 GPa (1.16 Msi).

What is XXXPC used for?

  • oil-immersed transformer insulation
  • switchgear components in oil
  • punched insulating parts

Working with XXXPC

Is XXXPC easy to machine?

Cuts and drills easily with sharp carbide tooling and high speed/low feed, but paper dust is abrasive and irritating — use dust extraction and back the workpiece to avoid edge delamination.

Can XXXPC be welded?

Thermoset — not weldable; join by riveting, bolting or epoxy/phenolic adhesive bonding.

Can XXXPC be formed, bent or molded?

Primary process is cold blanking/punching at room temperature in gauges up to about 3.2 mm; no post-cure reforming is possible, and thicker sheet may need slight warming for clean punched edges.
