What is XPC?

XPC is X in the XPC grade — choose the cold-punchable thin sheet (≤3 mm) for room-temperature piercing and blanking and as the base for single-sided FR-1/XPC copper-clad laminate; strength drops to 85 MPa and 110 °C. XPC has a tensile strength of 85 MPa (12.3 ksi), weaker than 75% of composite grades. Elongation at break is 2.5% and the elastic modulus is 7 GPa (1.02 Msi). XPC has a density of 1.35 g/cm³ (0.0488 lb/in³), lighter than 75% of composite grades. Its glass-transition temperature is 150°C (302 °F). Working with XPC

Is X easy to machine?

Cut with carbide or PCD tooling at high speed and light feed; the dust is abrasive and irritates the airway, so extraction is mandatory. Back up the exit side when drilling to prevent delamination.

Can X be welded?

Thermoset laminate — it cannot be welded or heat-fused; join with bolts, rivets or epoxy adhesive.

Can X be formed, bent or molded?

Standard Grade X is a cold-machined flat product only. Where blanking is required, specify XPC for room-temperature punching or XP for punching and post-forming after heating to 80–130 °C.

What surface finishes work on X?

Sands, chamfers, silk-screens and accepts epoxy paint. It cannot be plated; seal the edges with varnish in warm, humid service to reduce water absorption.

XPC — frequently asked

What is XPC used for?

XPC is typically used for general insulation boards, low-cost mechanical spacers and electrical panel backing. In short: cheapest paper phenolic grade; general-purpose insulating board; base grade below XX.

What is the tensile strength of XPC?

XPC has a typical tensile strength of 85 MPa (12.3 ksi) — weaker than 75% of composite grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 4 listed tempers.

Is XPC easy to machine?

Yes — machinability is rated very good (75/100, better than 79% of composite grades). Cut with carbide or PCD tooling at high speed and light feed; the dust is abrasive and irritates the airway, so extraction is mandatory. Back up the exit side when drilling to prevent delamination.

Can XPC be welded?

Thermoset laminate — it cannot be welded or heat-fused; join with bolts, rivets or epoxy adhesive.

What surface finishes work on XPC?

Sands, chamfers, silk-screens and accepts epoxy paint. It cannot be plated; seal the edges with varnish in warm, humid service to reduce water absorption.

Can XPC be formed, bent or molded?

Standard Grade X is a cold-machined flat product only. Where blanking is required, specify XPC for room-temperature punching or XP for punching and post-forming after heating to 80–130 °C.

What is the maximum service temperature of XPC?

XPC is rated for continuous use to about 110°C (230 °F), and briefly to 150°C. Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
