Flame-retardant paper phenolic
Use the flame-retardant formulation when UL 94 V-0 approval is required for electrical enclosures, terminal boards and copper-clad base material; service temperature falls to 110 °C.—851.588 Shore D
Hot-punchable / post-forming paper phenolic
Pick the more flexible resin system when parts are punched or bent hot at about 90–130 °C in high volume; formability costs strength, at 95 MPa instead of 110 MPa.—95287 Shore D

Working with X

Is X easy to machine?

Cut with carbide or PCD tooling at high speed and light feed; the dust is abrasive and irritates the airway, so extraction is mandatory. Back up the exit side when drilling to prevent delamination.

Can X be welded?

Thermoset laminate — it cannot be welded or heat-fused; join with bolts, rivets or epoxy adhesive.

Can X be formed, bent or molded?

Standard Grade X is a cold-machined flat product only. Where blanking is required, specify XPC for room-temperature punching or XP for punching and post-forming after heating to 80–130 °C.

What surface finishes work on X?

Sands, chamfers, silk-screens and accepts epoxy paint. It cannot be plated; seal the edges with varnish in warm, humid service to reduce water absorption.

X — frequently asked

What is X used for?

X is typically used for general insulation boards, low-cost mechanical spacers and electrical panel backing. In short: cheapest paper phenolic grade; general-purpose insulating board; base grade below XX.

What is the tensile strength of X?

X has a typical tensile strength of 110 MPa (16 ksi) — weaker than 64% of composite grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 4 listed tempers.

Is X easy to machine?

Reasonably — machinability is rated good (65/100, better than 75% of composite grades).

What surface finishes work on X?

Sands, chamfers, silk-screens and accepts epoxy paint. It cannot be plated; seal the edges with varnish in warm, humid service to reduce water absorption.

Can X be formed, bent or molded?

Standard Grade X is a cold-machined flat product only. Where blanking is required, specify XPC for room-temperature punching or XP for punching and post-forming after heating to 80–130 °C.

What is the maximum service temperature of X?

X is rated for continuous use to about 120°C (248 °F), and briefly to 150°C. Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
