Titanium C-4 vs ZTC4

Titanium · grade comparison

Titanium C-4 and ZTC4 are both titanium grades. ZTC4 is the stronger of the two: yield strength 840 MPa (122 ksi) against 530 MPa (76.9 ksi) for C-4, about 58% more; tensile strength follows at 910 MPa (132 ksi) vs 620 MPa (89.9 ksi). In exchange, C-4 is the more ductile: elongation 12% versus 8% for ZTC4, and ZTC4 is harder (325 HB vs 265 HB). ZTC4 is stiffer (110 GPa vs 104 GPa) and ZTC4 runs hotter in service (350°C vs 300°C continuous). On the shop floor, C-4 machines more easily (30 vs 18 out of 100) and C-4 welds better (excellent vs very good).

C-4Choose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part is machined in volume.

ZTC4Choose it when strength drives the design, or when the part sees heat.

C-4 vs ZTC4 — frequently asked

Is ZTC4 stronger than C-4?

Yes. ZTC4 has a typical yield strength of 840 MPa (122 ksi) against 530 MPa (76.9 ksi) for C-4 — about 58% more. Tensile strength is 910 MPa (132 ksi) vs 620 MPa (89.9 ksi).

Which is cheaper, C-4 or ZTC4?

Both sit in the same relative cost tier ($$$$, high); the part price will be decided by machining time, tolerance and quantity rather than by the material.

Which is easier to machine, C-4 or ZTC4?

C-4, by a small margin. Both rate poor for machinability — 30/100 against 18/100 for ZTC4; for welding the order is C-4 first (excellent, 85/100) then ZTC4 (very good, 75/100).
