Steel SUJ1-IH vs SUJ1-N

Steel · SUJ1 temper comparison

SUJ1-IH and SUJ1-N are two conditions of the same steel grade, SUJ1: IH (induction hardened) versus N (normalized). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. SUJ1-IH is the stronger of the two: yield strength 950 MPa (138 ksi) against 600 MPa (87 ksi) for SUJ1-N, about 58% more; tensile strength follows at 1,100 MPa (160 ksi) vs 1,000 MPa (145 ksi). In exchange, SUJ1-N is the more ductile: elongation 10% versus 6% for SUJ1-IH, and SUJ1-IH is harder (650 HB vs 300 HB). SUJ1-N runs hotter in service (200°C vs 120°C continuous). On the shop floor, SUJ1-N machines more easily (poor vs not recommended).

SUJ1-IH vs SUJ1-N — frequently asked

Is SUJ1-IH stronger than SUJ1-N?

Yes. SUJ1-IH has a typical yield strength of 950 MPa (138 ksi) against 600 MPa (87 ksi) for SUJ1-N — about 58% more. Tensile strength is 1,100 MPa (160 ksi) vs 1,000 MPa (145 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, IH or N?

Annealed is the default SUJ1 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither IH nor N). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, SUJ1-IH or SUJ1-N?

SUJ1-N. Its machinability rates poor (25/100) against not recommended (8/100) for SUJ1-IH.
