Steel SUJ1 Annealed vs SUJ1-N
Steel · SUJ1 temper comparison
SUJ1 Annealed and SUJ1-N are two conditions of the same steel grade, SUJ1: Annealed versus N (normalized). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. SUJ1-N is the stronger of the two: yield strength 600 MPa (87 ksi) against 400 MPa (58 ksi) for SUJ1 Annealed, about 50% more; tensile strength follows at 1,000 MPa (145 ksi) vs 660 MPa (95.7 ksi). In exchange, SUJ1 Annealed is the more ductile: elongation 22% versus 10% for SUJ1-N, and SUJ1-N is harder (300 HB vs 190 HB). SUJ1-N runs hotter in service (200°C vs 150°C continuous). On the shop floor, SUJ1 Annealed machines more easily (fair vs poor).
SUJ1 AnnealedChoose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part is machined in volume.
SUJ1-NChoose it when strength drives the design, or when the part sees heat.
SUJ1 Annealed vs SUJ1-N: propertiesHow to read these bars
- One bar per material. A full bar is the highest value among all steel grades in the FabDigit library; each bar is drawn as a share of that.
- The better value (by the usual engineering direction) is in bold. Rows with no direction — density, thermal conductivity — have no bold.
- Values are typical room-temperature figures for the condition named on each card.
- Confirm against the certified mill or resin datasheet before design release.

SUJ1 Annealed vs SUJ1-N — frequently asked
Is SUJ1-N stronger than SUJ1 Annealed?
Yes. SUJ1-N has a typical yield strength of 600 MPa (87 ksi) against 400 MPa (58 ksi) for SUJ1 Annealed — about 50% more. Tensile strength is 1,000 MPa (145 ksi) vs 660 MPa (95.7 ksi).
Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, Annealed or N?
Annealed is the default SUJ1 condition in the FabDigit quote flow. The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.
Which is easier to machine, SUJ1 Annealed or SUJ1-N?
SUJ1 Annealed. Its machinability rates fair (42/100) against poor (25/100) for SUJ1-N.
