Steel S5 Annealed vs S5 As-Quenched
Steel · S5 temper comparison
S5 Annealed and S5 As-Quenched are two conditions of the same steel grade, S5: Annealed versus As-Quenched (870 °C oil quench, untempered). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. S5 As-Quenched is the stronger of the two: yield strength 2,050 MPa (297 ksi) against 440 MPa (63.8 ksi) for S5 Annealed, about 4.7 times as much; tensile strength follows at 2,400 MPa (348 ksi) vs 725 MPa (105 ksi). In exchange, S5 Annealed is the more ductile: elongation 25% versus 1% for S5 As-Quenched, and S5 As-Quenched is harder (690 HB vs 215 HB). S5 Annealed runs hotter in service (400°C vs 150°C continuous) and S5 Annealed conducts heat better (24 W/m·K vs 21 W/m·K). On the shop floor, S5 Annealed machines more easily (fair vs not recommended) and S5 Annealed welds better (poor vs not recommended).
S5 AnnealedChoose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part sees heat.
S5 As-QuenchedChoose it when strength drives the design.
S5 Annealed vs S5 As-Quenched: propertiesHow to read these bars
- One bar per material. A full bar is the highest value among all steel grades in the FabDigit library; each bar is drawn as a share of that.
- The better value (by the usual engineering direction) is in bold. Rows with no direction — density, thermal conductivity — have no bold.
- Values are typical room-temperature figures for the condition named on each card.
- Confirm against the certified mill or resin datasheet before design release.

S5 Annealed vs S5 As-Quenched — frequently asked
Is S5 As-Quenched stronger than S5 Annealed?
Yes. S5 As-Quenched has a typical yield strength of 2,050 MPa (297 ksi) against 440 MPa (63.8 ksi) for S5 Annealed — about 4.7 times as much. Tensile strength is 2,400 MPa (348 ksi) vs 725 MPa (105 ksi).
Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, Annealed or As-Quenched?
Annealed is the default S5 condition in the FabDigit quote flow. The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.
Which is easier to machine, S5 Annealed or S5 As-Quenched?
S5 Annealed. Its machinability rates fair (50/100) against not recommended (5/100) for S5 As-Quenched; for welding the order is S5 Annealed first (poor, 25/100) then S5 As-Quenched (not recommended, 5/100).
