Steel P3 vs P5
Steel · grade comparison
Steel P3 and P5 are both steel grades. P3 is the stronger of the two: yield strength 340 MPa (49.3 ksi) against 290 MPa (42.1 ksi) for P5, about 17% more; tensile strength follows at 540 MPa (78.3 ksi) vs 490 MPa (71.1 ksi). P3 is harder — 160 HB against 110 HB for P5 — which matters for wear surfaces and threads. P3 runs hotter in service (400°C vs 350°C continuous) and P3 conducts heat better (40 W/m·K vs 36 W/m·K). On the shop floor, P5 machines more easily (very good vs good), P5 forms better (80 vs 70 out of 100), and P3 sits in a lower cost tier (standard, $$) than P5 (premium, $$$).
P3Choose it when strength drives the design, or when surface hardness matters.
P5Choose it when the part is machined in volume.
P3 vs P5: propertiesHow to read these bars
- One bar per material. A full bar is the highest value among all steel grades in the FabDigit library; each bar is drawn as a share of that.
- The better value (by the usual engineering direction) is in bold. Rows with no direction — density, thermal conductivity — have no bold.
- Values are typical room-temperature figures for the condition named on each card.
- Confirm against the certified mill or resin datasheet before design release.

P3 vs P5 — frequently asked
Is P3 stronger than P5?
Yes. P3 has a typical yield strength of 340 MPa (49.3 ksi) against 290 MPa (42.1 ksi) for P5 — about 17% more. Tensile strength is 540 MPa (78.3 ksi) vs 490 MPa (71.1 ksi).
Which is cheaper, P3 or P5?
P3 is the lower-cost material: it sits in the standard tier ($$) while P5 is premium ($$$). Part price depends far more on geometry, tolerance and quantity than on raw stock — upload a CAD file for a live quote.
Which is easier to machine, P3 or P5?
P5. Its machinability rates very good (72/100) against good (62/100) for P3; for welding the order is P3 first (good, 65/100) then P5 (good, 60/100).
