Steel C35-IH vs C35 +N

Steel · C35 temper comparison

C35-IH and C35 +N are two conditions of the same steel grade, C35: IH (induction hardened) versus +N (normalized). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. C35-IH is the stronger of the two: yield strength 450 MPa (65.3 ksi) against 320 MPa (46.4 ksi) for C35 +N, about 41% more; tensile strength follows at 700 MPa (102 ksi) vs 600 MPa (87 ksi). In exchange, C35 +N is the more ductile: elongation 20% versus 15% for C35-IH, and C35-IH is harder (550 HB vs 175 HB). C35 +N runs hotter in service (400°C vs 180°C continuous). On the shop floor, C35 +N machines more easily (good vs poor) and C35 +N welds better (fair vs poor).

C35-IH vs C35 +N — frequently asked

Is C35-IH stronger than C35 +N?

Yes. C35-IH has a typical yield strength of 450 MPa (65.3 ksi) against 320 MPa (46.4 ksi) for C35 +N — about 41% more. Tensile strength is 700 MPa (102 ksi) vs 600 MPa (87 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, IH or +N?

+N is the default C35 condition in the FabDigit quote flow. The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, C35-IH or C35 +N?

C35 +N. Its machinability rates good (55/100) against poor (15/100) for C35-IH; for welding the order is C35 +N first (fair, 50/100) then C35-IH (poor, 20/100).
