Steel C35 +A vs C35-IH

Steel · C35 temper comparison

C35 +A and C35-IH are two conditions of the same steel grade, C35: +A (annealed) versus IH (induction hardened). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. C35-IH is the stronger of the two: yield strength 450 MPa (65.3 ksi) against 275 MPa (39.9 ksi) for C35 +A, about 64% more; tensile strength follows at 700 MPa (102 ksi) vs 520 MPa (75.4 ksi). In exchange, C35 +A is the more ductile: elongation 25% versus 15% for C35-IH, and C35-IH is harder (550 HB vs 155 HB). C35 +A runs hotter in service (400°C vs 180°C continuous). On the shop floor, C35 +A machines more easily (good vs poor) and C35 +A welds better (fair vs poor).

C35 +AChoose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part sees heat.

C35 +A vs C35-IH — frequently asked

Is C35-IH stronger than C35 +A?

Yes. C35-IH has a typical yield strength of 450 MPa (65.3 ksi) against 275 MPa (39.9 ksi) for C35 +A — about 64% more. Tensile strength is 700 MPa (102 ksi) vs 520 MPa (75.4 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, +A or IH?

+N is the default C35 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither +A nor IH). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, C35 +A or C35-IH?

C35 +A. Its machinability rates good (60/100) against poor (15/100) for C35-IH; for welding the order is C35 +A first (fair, 50/100) then C35-IH (poor, 20/100).
