Steel C35-HR vs C35-IH

Steel · C35 temper comparison

C35-HR and C35-IH are two conditions of the same steel grade, C35: HR (hot rolled) versus IH (induction hardened). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. C35-IH is the stronger of the two: yield strength 450 MPa (65.3 ksi) against 300 MPa (43.5 ksi) for C35-HR, about 50% more; tensile strength follows at 700 MPa (102 ksi) vs 560 MPa (81.2 ksi). In exchange, C35-HR is the more ductile: elongation 20% versus 15% for C35-IH, and C35-IH is harder (550 HB vs 160 HB). C35-HR runs hotter in service (400°C vs 180°C continuous). On the shop floor, C35-HR machines more easily (good vs poor) and C35-HR welds better (fair vs poor).

C35-HR vs C35-IH — frequently asked

Is C35-IH stronger than C35-HR?

Yes. C35-IH has a typical yield strength of 450 MPa (65.3 ksi) against 300 MPa (43.5 ksi) for C35-HR — about 50% more. Tensile strength is 700 MPa (102 ksi) vs 560 MPa (81.2 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, HR or IH?

+N is the default C35 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither HR nor IH). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, C35-HR or C35-IH?

C35-HR. Its machinability rates good (55/100) against poor (15/100) for C35-IH; for welding the order is C35-HR first (fair, 50/100) then C35-IH (poor, 20/100).

Upload a CAD file and FabDigit prices the part in C35-HR and C35-IH side by side — material, machining time, tolerance and finish in one quote. Certified material data ships with the order on request.

Typical handbook values for the conditions named above, normalised for comparison. Hardness on non-Brinell scales is converted approximately for charting only. Request certified data with your order for design-critical properties.
