Steel C22 Carburized vs C22-QT
Steel · C22 temper comparison
C22 Carburized and C22-QT are two conditions of the same steel grade, C22: Carburized (carburized and hardened) versus QT (quenched and tempered). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. C22-QT is the stronger of the two: yield strength 375 MPa (54.4 ksi) against 340 MPa (49.3 ksi) for C22 Carburized, about 10% more. C22-QT is the more ductile: elongation 22% versus 15% for C22 Carburized, and C22 Carburized is harder (620 HB vs 175 HB). C22-QT runs hotter in service (400°C vs 180°C continuous) and C22-QT conducts heat better (50 W/m·K vs 45 W/m·K). On the shop floor, C22-QT machines more easily (good vs poor) and C22-QT welds better (excellent vs poor).
C22-QTChoose it when strength drives the design, or when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded.
C22 Carburized vs C22-QT: propertiesHow to read these bars
- One bar per material. A full bar is the highest value among all steel grades in the FabDigit library; each bar is drawn as a share of that.
- The better value (by the usual engineering direction) is in bold. Rows with no direction — density, thermal conductivity — have no bold.
- Values are typical room-temperature figures for the condition named on each card.
- Confirm against the certified mill or resin datasheet before design release.

C22 Carburized vs C22-QT — frequently asked
Is C22-QT stronger than C22 Carburized?
Yes. C22-QT has a typical yield strength of 375 MPa (54.4 ksi) against 340 MPa (49.3 ksi) for C22 Carburized — about 10% more. Tensile strength is 570 MPa (82.7 ksi) vs 550 MPa (79.8 ksi).
Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, Carburized or QT?
Normalized is the default C22 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither Carburized nor QT). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.
Which is easier to machine, C22 Carburized or C22-QT?
C22-QT. Its machinability rates good (62/100) against poor (20/100) for C22 Carburized; for welding the order is C22-QT first (excellent, 92/100) then C22 Carburized (poor, 20/100).
