Steel C22 Carburized vs C22 Normalized
Steel · C22 temper comparison
C22 Carburized and C22 Normalized are two conditions of the same steel grade, C22: Carburized (carburized and hardened) versus Normalized. The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. C22 Carburized is the stronger of the two: yield strength 340 MPa (49.3 ksi) against 285 MPa (41.3 ksi) for C22 Normalized, about 19% more; tensile strength follows at 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) vs 490 MPa (71.1 ksi). In exchange, C22 Normalized is the more ductile: elongation 26% versus 15% for C22 Carburized, and C22 Carburized is harder (620 HB vs 140 HB). C22 Normalized runs hotter in service (400°C vs 180°C continuous) and C22 Normalized conducts heat better (50 W/m·K vs 45 W/m·K). On the shop floor, C22 Normalized machines more easily (good vs poor) and C22 Normalized welds better (excellent vs poor).

C22 Carburized vs C22 Normalized: propertiesHow to read these bars
- One bar per material. A full bar is the highest value among all steel grades in the FabDigit library; each bar is drawn as a share of that.
- The better value (by the usual engineering direction) is in bold. Rows with no direction — density, thermal conductivity — have no bold.
- Values are typical room-temperature figures for the condition named on each card.
- Confirm against the certified mill or resin datasheet before design release.

C22 Carburized vs C22 Normalized — frequently asked
Is C22 Carburized stronger than C22 Normalized?
Yes. C22 Carburized has a typical yield strength of 340 MPa (49.3 ksi) against 285 MPa (41.3 ksi) for C22 Normalized — about 19% more. Tensile strength is 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) vs 490 MPa (71.1 ksi).
Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, Carburized or Normalized?
Normalized is the default C22 condition in the FabDigit quote flow. The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.
Which is easier to machine, C22 Carburized or C22 Normalized?
C22 Normalized. Its machinability rates good (62/100) against poor (20/100) for C22 Carburized; for welding the order is C22 Normalized first (excellent, 92/100) then C22 Carburized (poor, 20/100).
