Steel C22 Annealed vs C22 Carburized
Steel · C22 temper comparison
C22 Annealed and C22 Carburized are two conditions of the same steel grade, C22: Annealed versus Carburized (carburized and hardened). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. C22 Carburized is the stronger of the two: yield strength 340 MPa (49.3 ksi) against 235 MPa (34.1 ksi) for C22 Annealed, about 45% more; tensile strength follows at 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) vs 450 MPa (65.3 ksi). In exchange, C22 Annealed is the more ductile: elongation 30% versus 15% for C22 Carburized, and C22 Carburized is harder (620 HB vs 125 HB). C22 Annealed runs hotter in service (400°C vs 180°C continuous) and C22 Annealed conducts heat better (50 W/m·K vs 45 W/m·K). On the shop floor, C22 Annealed machines more easily (good vs poor) and C22 Annealed welds better (excellent vs poor).
C22 AnnealedChoose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part sees heat.
C22 CarburizedChoose it when strength drives the design.
C22 Annealed vs C22 Carburized: propertiesHow to read these bars
- One bar per material. A full bar is the highest value among all steel grades in the FabDigit library; each bar is drawn as a share of that.
- The better value (by the usual engineering direction) is in bold. Rows with no direction — density, thermal conductivity — have no bold.
- Values are typical room-temperature figures for the condition named on each card.
- Confirm against the certified mill or resin datasheet before design release.

C22 Annealed vs C22 Carburized — frequently asked
Is C22 Carburized stronger than C22 Annealed?
Yes. C22 Carburized has a typical yield strength of 340 MPa (49.3 ksi) against 235 MPa (34.1 ksi) for C22 Annealed — about 45% more. Tensile strength is 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) vs 450 MPa (65.3 ksi).
Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, Annealed or Carburized?
Normalized is the default C22 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither Annealed nor Carburized). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.
Which is easier to machine, C22 Annealed or C22 Carburized?
C22 Annealed. Its machinability rates good (55/100) against poor (20/100) for C22 Carburized; for welding the order is C22 Annealed first (excellent, 92/100) then C22 Carburized (poor, 20/100).
