Steel AR400 vs NM500

Steel · grade comparison

Steel AR400 and NM500 are both steel grades, both wear resistant steel. NM500 is the stronger of the two: yield strength 1,300 MPa (189 ksi) against 1,050 MPa (152 ksi) for AR400, about 24% more; tensile strength follows at 1,600 MPa (232 ksi) vs 1,250 MPa (181 ksi). In exchange, AR400 is the more ductile: elongation 11% versus 8% for NM500, and NM500 is harder (500 HB vs 400 HB). AR400 conducts heat better (42 W/m·K vs 34 W/m·K). On the shop floor, AR400 machines more easily (poor vs not recommended), AR400 welds better (good vs fair), and NM500 sits in a lower cost tier (standard, $$) than AR400 (premium, $$$).

AR400Choose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part is machined in volume.

NM500Choose it when strength drives the design, or when cost is the deciding factor.

AR400 vs NM500 — frequently asked

Is NM500 stronger than AR400?

Yes. NM500 has a typical yield strength of 1,300 MPa (189 ksi) against 1,050 MPa (152 ksi) for AR400 — about 24% more. Tensile strength is 1,600 MPa (232 ksi) vs 1,250 MPa (181 ksi).

Which is cheaper, AR400 or NM500?

NM500 is the lower-cost material: it sits in the standard tier ($$) while AR400 is premium ($$$). Part price depends far more on geometry, tolerance and quantity than on raw stock — upload a CAD file for a live quote.

Which is easier to machine, AR400 or NM500?

AR400. Its machinability rates poor (22/100) against not recommended (12/100) for NM500; for welding the order is AR400 first (good, 55/100) then NM500 (fair, 35/100).
