Steel A321-HR vs A321-IH

Steel · A321 temper comparison

A321-HR and A321-IH are two conditions of the same steel grade, A321: HR (hot rolled) versus IH (induction hardened). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. A321-IH is the stronger of the two: yield strength 640 MPa (92.8 ksi) against 305 MPa (44.2 ksi) for A321-HR, about 110% more; tensile strength follows at 820 MPa (119 ksi) vs 550 MPa (79.8 ksi). In exchange, A321-HR is the more ductile: elongation 18% versus 16% for A321-IH, and A321-IH is harder (525 HB vs 163 HB). A321-HR runs hotter in service (400°C vs 200°C continuous). On the shop floor, A321-HR machines more easily (good vs poor) and A321-HR welds better (fair vs poor).

A321-HR vs A321-IH — frequently asked

Is A321-IH stronger than A321-HR?

Yes. A321-IH has a typical yield strength of 640 MPa (92.8 ksi) against 305 MPa (44.2 ksi) for A321-HR — about 110% more. Tensile strength is 820 MPa (119 ksi) vs 550 MPa (79.8 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, HR or IH?

HR is the default A321 condition in the FabDigit quote flow. The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, A321-HR or A321-IH?

A321-HR. Its machinability rates good (58/100) against poor (15/100) for A321-IH; for welding the order is A321-HR first (fair, 48/100) then A321-IH (poor, 15/100).
