Steel 30CrMo-CR vs 30CrMo Q&T
Steel · 30CrMo temper comparison
30CrMo-CR and 30CrMo Q&T are two conditions of the same steel grade, 30CrMo: CR (cold rolled) versus Q&T (quenched and tempered). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. 30CrMo Q&T is the stronger of the two: yield strength 850 MPa (123 ksi) against 570 MPa (82.7 ksi) for 30CrMo-CR, about 49% more; tensile strength follows at 990 MPa (144 ksi) vs 720 MPa (104 ksi). 30CrMo Q&T is harder — 300 HB against 225 HB for 30CrMo-CR — which matters for wear surfaces and threads. 30CrMo Q&T runs hotter in service (450°C vs 350°C continuous). On the shop floor, 30CrMo-CR machines more easily (good vs fair), 30CrMo-CR welds better (good vs fair), and 30CrMo-CR forms better (fair vs poor).
30CrMo-CRChoose it when the part is machined in volume, or when it will be welded.
30CrMo Q&TChoose it when strength drives the design, or when surface hardness matters.
30CrMo-CR vs 30CrMo Q&T: propertiesHow to read these bars
- One bar per material. A full bar is the highest value among all steel grades in the FabDigit library; each bar is drawn as a share of that.
- The better value (by the usual engineering direction) is in bold. Rows with no direction — density, thermal conductivity — have no bold.
- Values are typical room-temperature figures for the condition named on each card.
- Confirm against the certified mill or resin datasheet before design release.

30CrMo-CR vs 30CrMo Q&T — frequently asked
Is 30CrMo Q&T stronger than 30CrMo-CR?
Yes. 30CrMo Q&T has a typical yield strength of 850 MPa (123 ksi) against 570 MPa (82.7 ksi) for 30CrMo-CR — about 49% more. Tensile strength is 990 MPa (144 ksi) vs 720 MPa (104 ksi).
Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, CR or Q&T?
HR is the default 30CrMo condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither CR nor Q&T). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.
Which is easier to machine, 30CrMo-CR or 30CrMo Q&T?
30CrMo-CR. Its machinability rates good (55/100) against fair (45/100) for 30CrMo Q&T; for welding the order is 30CrMo-CR first (good, 58/100) then 30CrMo Q&T (fair, 45/100).
