Stainless Steel 414-A vs 414-T
Stainless Steel · 414 temper comparison
414-A and 414-T are two conditions of the same stainless steel grade, 414: A (solution annealed) versus T (condition T). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. 414-T is the stronger of the two: yield strength 690 MPa (100 ksi) against 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) for 414-A, about 11% more; tensile strength follows at 895 MPa (130 ksi) vs 795 MPa (115 ksi). 414-T is harder — 269 HB against 235 HB for 414-A — which matters for wear surfaces and threads. 414-A runs hotter in service (600°C vs 550°C continuous). On the shop floor, 414-A forms better (fair vs poor).
414-AChoose it when the part sees heat.
414-TChoose it when strength drives the design, or when surface hardness matters.
414-A vs 414-T: propertiesHow to read these bars
- One bar per material. A full bar is the highest value among all stainless steel grades in the FabDigit library; each bar is drawn as a share of that.
- The better value (by the usual engineering direction) is in bold. Rows with no direction — density, thermal conductivity — have no bold.
- Values are typical room-temperature figures for the condition named on each card.
- Confirm against the certified mill or resin datasheet before design release.

414-A vs 414-T — frequently asked
Is 414-T stronger than 414-A?
Yes. 414-T has a typical yield strength of 690 MPa (100 ksi) against 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) for 414-A — about 11% more. Tensile strength is 895 MPa (130 ksi) vs 795 MPa (115 ksi).
Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, A or T?
A is the default 414 condition in the FabDigit quote flow. The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.
Which is easier to machine, 414-A or 414-T?
414-A, by a small margin. Both rate fair for machinability — 45/100 against 38/100 for 414-T; for welding the order is 414-A first (fair, 38/100) then 414-T (poor, 30/100).

Upload a CAD file and FabDigit prices the part in 414-A and 414-T side by side — material, machining time, tolerance and finish in one quote. Certified material data ships with the order on request.
Typical handbook values for the conditions named above, normalised for comparison. Hardness on non-Brinell scales is converted approximately for charting only. Request certified data with your order for design-critical properties.
