Magnesium Alloy MA8-HR vs MA8-M
Magnesium Alloy · MA8 temper comparison
MA8-HR and MA8-M are two conditions of the same magnesium alloy grade, MA8: HR (hot rolled) versus M (thermomechanically controlled processed). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. MA8-HR is the stronger of the two: yield strength 140 MPa (20.3 ksi) against 130 MPa (18.9 ksi) for MA8-M, about 8% more. In exchange, MA8-M is the more ductile: elongation 15% versus 12% for MA8-HR, and MA8-HR is harder (48 HB vs 45 HB).
MA8-HRChoose it when strength drives the design.
MA8-MChoose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded.
MA8-HR vs MA8-M: propertiesHow to read these bars
- One bar per material. A full bar is the highest value among all magnesium alloy grades in the FabDigit library; each bar is drawn as a share of that.
- The better value (by the usual engineering direction) is in bold. Rows with no direction — density, thermal conductivity — have no bold.
- Values are typical room-temperature figures for the condition named on each card.
- Confirm against the certified mill or resin datasheet before design release.

MA8-HR vs MA8-M — frequently asked
Is MA8-HR stronger than MA8-M?
Yes. MA8-HR has a typical yield strength of 140 MPa (20.3 ksi) against 130 MPa (18.9 ksi) for MA8-M — about 8% more. Tensile strength is 235 MPa (34.1 ksi) vs 240 MPa (34.8 ksi).
Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, HR or M?
M is the default MA8 condition in the FabDigit quote flow. The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.
When should I choose MA8-HR over MA8-M?
Pick MA8-HR when strength drives the design. Pick MA8-M when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded.
