Magnesium Alloy MA8-H vs MA8-M

Magnesium Alloy · MA8 temper comparison

MA8-H and MA8-M are two conditions of the same magnesium alloy grade, MA8: H (hardened) versus M (thermomechanically controlled processed). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. MA8-H is the stronger of the two: yield strength 200 MPa (29 ksi) against 130 MPa (18.9 ksi) for MA8-M, about 54% more; tensile strength follows at 265 MPa (38.4 ksi) vs 240 MPa (34.8 ksi). In exchange, MA8-M is the more ductile: elongation 15% versus 8% for MA8-H, and MA8-H is harder (55 HB vs 45 HB). MA8-M runs hotter in service (150°C vs 120°C continuous). On the shop floor, MA8-M welds better (excellent vs very good).

MA8-H vs MA8-M — frequently asked

Is MA8-H stronger than MA8-M?

Yes. MA8-H has a typical yield strength of 200 MPa (29 ksi) against 130 MPa (18.9 ksi) for MA8-M — about 54% more. Tensile strength is 265 MPa (38.4 ksi) vs 240 MPa (34.8 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, H or M?

M is the default MA8 condition in the FabDigit quote flow. The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which welds better, MA8-H or MA8-M?

MA8-M. Its weldability rates excellent (90/100) against very good (80/100) for MA8-H.
